Product Description: This Tukari (Patchwork) Skirt is a delightful blend of skills, meaningful arrangement of pieces, and fine, precise needlework. It is composed of small pieces of various sizes, dyed, printed, and designed, but not old, worn-out rags with irregular shapes. Most of the pieces are rectangular, large or squarish, taken from fresh lengths of rayon fabric.
The lengths are properly colored using various dyeing methods, such as mono-color dye, batik dye, and printed with both colorful patterns and mono-color motifs. The different pieces are arranged in a way that they contribute to the unity of the whole, yet each piece stands for its own identity, creating a delightful contrast. The use of twisted ropes to define the joints between pieces adds to the magic of the design.
This tukari skirt, made of pieced-together fabric, inherits its ethnicity and antiqueness from one of India's early costume traditions. The earliest example of a pieced costume is reported from the life of Buddha, who was presented with a chadara (sheet) composed of old rags by a poor disciple. The Buddha's respect for the disciple's sentiments and the labor and talent that transformed the poorest of rags into a magnificent wear for the Great Master led to the acceptance of a pieced chadara as one of Buddhism's most venerated objects.
Later, the Buddhism followed the cult of pieced wears as one of its most sacred practices, and the utilization of old wears is still one of Buddhism's golden principles. The tradition of pieced clothing was also followed by Guru Nanak, the founder of Sikhism, who is known to have used a tukari chadara.
Patchwork, a highly skilled art requiring the finest needlework, is almost another version of pieced costumes. The Boho skirt is made entirely by hand, using random patches from vintage fabrics. Once the skirt is constructed, it is dyed. The entire process is completely manual, including the making of the dye. As a result, the skirt color from one lot will vary from the next, making every skirt unique.
